How Scotland’s Fauna & Flora Wove the Rich Tapestry of Tartan

How Scotland’s Fauna and Flora wove the rich tapestry of tartan

This experience can be based either in our barn, with Rue our Spotted Eagle Owl, or around a long table outside amongst nature in our gardens.

Hamish, a true Scots and a passionate ambassador of Highland wear, is also a qualified Herbologist from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh and has specialised in Scotland’s natural flora and fauna. He will take you on a journey of discovery, looking at how Scotland’s unique fauna and flora have shaped the history of tartan and how you could historically tell what clan someone was from based on the colour of their tartan. He will also explore how different colours can be obtained using different plants and will have examples to look at.

This experience will be led by a presentation, but Hamish will have examples of some seasonal plant material and corresponding yarn for you to look at.

In addition, a Call of the Wild notebook will be provided so you can take notes and use a small sample of the yarn and make notes of the corresponding plant to create a working memory of your time here at in Highland Perthshire.

You are also very welcome to wander around our gardens and shop. Guest toilets, cloak room are also available

This experience can either be followed by afternoon tea and cake, or a light lunch depending on the time of day.

Duration: 1.5 hours including refreshments
